IPAF 1b training for static boom platforms — vehicle-mounted, trailer and spider lifts. A 1-day course leading to the IPAF PAL Card, valid 5 years — at our Croydon centre or on site across London and the South East.
IPAF 1b training is a one-day operator course for static boom machines — vehicle-mounted, trailer-mounted and spider (tracked) booms that are stabilised and operated from a static position. It suits first-time operators as well as those renewing an expired PAL Card, and it's delivered as a mix of theory and hands-on practical operation at our Croydon centre or on site at your premises.
Delegates learn to prepare, set up, inspect and safely operate the machine, covering pre-use checks, correct stabiliser and outrigger deployment, ground assessment, machine categories, hazard identification, safe operating and emergency descent. In addition, the course covers employer and operator responsibilities under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and PUWER 1998. If you prefer, a blended option is available where the theory is completed online first.
Assessment is by a theory test and a practical assessment. Once you pass, you'll receive an IPAF Certificate of Training and the IPAF PAL (Powered Access Licence) Card, valid for 5 years and recognised worldwide. Furthermore, 1b can be combined with the mobile categories on our 1b, 3a & 3b triple-category course.
With more than 20 years of training experience, Access Towers helps over 350 trainees each month gain work-at-height qualifications across London and the South East. As an approved IPAF centre, our helpful bookings team make it easy to book — whether you're training yourself, your team, or someone else. Need mobile machines instead? See IPAF 3b training for cherry pickers, browse all our IPAF training courses, or hire access equipment through our scaffold tower hire service with next-day delivery.

Operating static boom MEWPs (vehicle-mounted, trailer and spider lifts): set-up and stabiliser deployment, ground assessment, pre-use inspection, hazard awareness, safe operation and emergency descent, plus employer/operator responsibilities under the Work at Height Regulations and PUWER.
A static boom (1b) is set up and operated from a stationary position — often vehicle-mounted, trailer or spider lifts. A mobile boom (3b, cherry picker) can be driven while elevated. If you use both, combine 1b with 3a & 3b.
One day, ending in an IPAF Certificate of Training and the PAL Card, valid 5 years. A blended option lets you do the theory online first.
